SONOGRAPHIC DEMONSTRATION OF INTERNATIONAL TERMINOLOGY FOR ENDOMETRIOSIS, 2021
Introdução e Objetivos
Endometriosis is characterized by the presence of endometrium-like epithelium and/or stroma outside the endometrium and myometrium, usually with an associated inflammatory process. Although laparoscopy is the gold standard test to establish a diagnosis of deep endometriosis, transvaginal ultrasound represents an alternative that can contribute to detection of the disease, because it is an accessible, low-cost, noninvasive examination that allows preoperative planning in cases requiring surgical treatment. However, in clinical practice, transvaginal ultrasound is still not widely used as the first-line examination in suspected cases of endometriosis. This video article describes the findings of endometriosis on transvaginal ultrasound, following the descriptions published in the international terminology article for endometriosis 2021. Therefore, the application of defined terms is intended to facilitate harmonization in endometriosis research and clinical practice.
Study Objectivo: To show how an International Terminology for Endometriosis 2021 can be illustrated in transvaginal ultrasound examination.
Casuística e Métodos
A list of terms and definitions in the field of endometriosis is presented in video form from transvaginal ultrasounds, including a definition for endometriosis and its subtypes, different sites, symptoms and outcomes. As a starting point for standardization and in order to be able to universally use a classification, the definitions of terms were structured in large: endometriosis, subtypes and corrected; anatomical spaces and other places where endometriosis can be detected.
Descrição das Imagens, Comentários e/ou Discussão
deep endometriosis in the retrocervical region with extension to the uterosacral and intestinal locus.
Considerações Finais ou Conclusões
The video article presents a list of terms and definitions in the field of endometriosis, as a result of a consensus-based approach. The list includes a definition for endometriosis and its subtypes, different locations and symptoms. The aim of this terminology is to provide a standardized language for the description of endometriosis, to be disseminated and applied widely and to be used as the basis for a new descriptive system for endometriosis. Furthermore, the use of the defined terms should lead to harmonization in endometriosis research and clinical practice.
